Best Global Universities 2022: Wroclaw Medical University is back among top Polish universities

Ranked 7th among all Polish universities and a leader among medical universities in Poland – these are the results of Wroclaw Medical University in the current edition of the "Best Global Universities" ranking.

Prepared by U.S. News & World Report, it is among the world's most prestigious academic rankings. This year's ranking included 1,750 universities from 90 countries – and 42 universities from Poland.
"The position in this ranking is the result of the work of the recent years. I am glad that after the Shanghai ranking, another world ranking confirms the strong position of Wrocław Medical University," says Prof. Piotr Ponikowski, the Rector of the University. Being one of the most cited Polish researchers, Ponikowski adds that this also confirms that properly conducted scientific activity allows Polish universities to easily compete with the rest of the world. "This can be observed in cardiovascular medicine, where we are ranked 58th among nearly 2,000 best institutions from around the world and 26th in Europe. This is a huge success that, as a cardiologist, I am particularly proud of and serves as proof that you can do it if you want," stresses Prof. Ponikowski.
The Rector of Wrocław Medical University admits that there is room for improvement in the overall image of Polish universities. Jagiellonian University, being the best Polish university, is ranked 320th in the world. "It is worth noting that for a long time, Jagiellonian University has functioned as a university combining the potential of traditional and medical faculties. This is a process that we keep an eye on also in Wrocław. We are aware that this is the last moment to create strong academic centres, so I have also carefully analysed the results of other universities in our city. It goes without saying that combining our potentials would definitely push us forward, so I am glad that such consultations have started in Wrocław," points out the Rector.
Wrocław Medical University was ranked 7th in Poland and 870th in the world (up from the 908th place) and is, once again, the highest ranked medical university in Poland.
The methodology of the ranking includes a number of factors. In the case of Wroclaw Medical University, the high position was determined primarily by the results in the "publications" category. It was ranked 211th in the world in terms of the percentage of the most cited publications and 353rd in the "normalised citation impact" category. Wroclaw Medical University also improved its position in the category of cardiovascular research (62nd in the world a year ago and 58th now, which makes it first among Polish universities). Meanwhile, it was ranked 218th in the "clinical medicine" category, moving up nearly 60 places.
