Recommendations on the infection prevention in summer semester

Recommendations for students and employees of the Wroclaw Medical University on the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection when conducting classes in the summer semester of 2020/2021.

We want to inform you that the following rules apply to all vaccinated and unvaccinated students.

Clinical and practical classes – Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Faculty and Faculty of Health Sciences

  1. Before each block, the student is obliged (repeated action) to read educational materials concerning the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection; and the person conducting the classes is obliged to verify the knowledge before the beginning of the classes. Only those who pass a test concerning SARS-COV 2 infection prevention can take part in the classes.
  2. The classes can be participated only by students who are healthy, with no symptoms suggesting an infectious disease, such as increased body temperature, rhinitis, coughing, dyspnoea, olfactory and taste disorders, sore throat, chest pain, diarrhoea, as well as those who have not had any contact with a person infected with SARS-CoV-2 within the last 14 days, those who do not live in a shared apartment with a person in quarantine or isolation, nor are themselves quarantined or isolated. This also applies to students who are not currently using any antipyretic nor anti-inflammatory drugs due to fever and/or infection.

NOTE: ANY PERSON EXHIBITING THE ABOVE-MENTIONED SYMPTOMS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED FROM PARTICIPATING IN CLASSES.
In the event of contact with a person infected with SARS-CoV-2, the person vaccinated with 2 doses of the vaccine is not quarantined.

Units, where practical classes should not take place:

  • red zones in hospitals,
  • ED (emergency department) except for Medical Rescue students and 6th-year students at the Medical Faculty,
  • infectious diseases wards – Provincial Specialist Hospital at ul. Koszarowa in Wrocław), where patients with Covid-19 are mostly treated,
  • Infectious Diseases Clinic at ul. Chałubińskiego,
  • haematology wards: for adults and children,
  • all other parts of the UCH wards, where COVID-19 patients are hospitalised,
  • whenever there is a risk of suspicion or infection of SARS-COV-2.

Preparation of students for participation in practical or clinical classes – Faculty of Medicine, Medicine and Dentistry, Pharmacy and Health Sciences

  1. Medical surgical mask;
  2. Workwear (medical uniform + disposable interlining clothing);
  3. Disposable gloves;
  4. Face shield (if a student or employee wishes to increase the security comfort);
  5. Hand disinfectant.

In case of procedures with aerosol production, as well as during classes at the Dental Polyclinic (contact with the patient's oral cavity), PPE protecting from the airborne and air-dust transmission

  1. FFP2 filtering half-masks;
  2. Workwear (medical uniform + disposable interlining clothing);
  3. Disposable gloves (it is advised to consider the double-gloving technique);
  4. Face shield.

The teacher conducting the classes supervises the correctness of students' preparation for classes. The use of disposable gloves, hand disinfection and the replacement of the surgical mask depending on the duration and activities performed in the class.

Theoretical classes, lectures, seminars and non-clinical classes
THE RECOMMENDED FORM ACCORDING TO THE EDUCATIONAL STANDARD FOR A GIVEN FIELD OF STUDY AND ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE DEAN OF A GIVEN FACULTY.

Preparation of students for participation in theoretical classes: laboratories, non-clinical exercise classes, anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical simulation centres, nursing laboratories or laboratories for medical rescue workers – Faculty of Medicine, Medicine and Dentistry, Pharmacy and Health Sciences

  1. The number of people in a room depending on the surface area;
  2. Maintaining a distance of 1.5 meters from other students;
  3. Surgical or cotton face masks are obligatory;
  4. Disposable gloves, if the nature of performed activity requires so;
  5. Distribution of a disinfectant or enabling the students to wash hands;
  6. 45-minute classes with a 15-minute break to ventilate the room;
  7. Disinfection of touch surfaces after each group – with an alcohol-based disinfectant (over 60%);
  8. If possible, physical barriers, such as glass or plastic sheets, may be used;
  9. Additionally, it is necessary to control the students' traffic and use the changing room as in the case of theoretical exams: disinfecting the changing rooms and sanitary units after each group of students.

Computer, technical, and simulated laboratories

  1. A hand disinfectant should be available in the room – students are required to disinfect their hands before working with a computer.
  2. After each class and before the arrival of a new group, it is recommended to disinfect touch surfaces: switches, desks, keyboards, computer mice. In the case of keyboards, foil may be used and changed after each group. Such a keyboard covered with foil needs to be disinfected as well.
  3. Each student should have their own ballpoint pen and notebook.
  4. The room should be ventilated every 1 hour.
  5. Students and academics should remain in surgical face masks and use them properly (change the mask after it becomes damp, covering the nose and mouth.)
  6. Obligation to conduct classes while keeping a social distance (1.5 m distance between people).

Residence hall

  1. Reduction of the number of students in the rooms (to 2 people) should be considered.
  2. Limitation of the elevator's use (except for special situations, where after consulting with the administrator of the facility, 2 persons are simultaneously allowed to use the elevator). Such persons should stand as far apart from each other as possible and wear mouth and nose protection.
  3. Lift buttons and handles should be regularly disinfected (there should be a record of disinfections, monitored by the administrator of the facility).
  4. Near the lifts, place a (bilingual) notice regarding restrictions on the use of the lifts only by persons with medical indications or for the transport of heavy equipment, on the maximum number of users, as well as the obligation to cover the mouth and nose when there are two people in the lift.
  5. The student residence halls should be provided with hand disinfectants (recommended location: at the entrance to the building, on each floor and in bathrooms).
  6. Toilets, staircases, corridors, kitchens, and bathrooms should be disinfected regularly.
  7. The number of people in one bathroom needs to be limited, and a notice concerning the maximum number of people inside should be placed on the front door. It is recommended that one bathroom is used by the number of people calculated as follows: the number of toilers and/or showers divided by two.
  8. It is necessary for the administrator of the facility to impose an obligation to verify cleanliness.
  9. It is recommended to monitor daily cleaning work, with particular emphasis on maintaining clean passageways, to disinfect touch surfaces: railings, door handles, light switches, keyboards, computer mice, handles, chair railings and flat surfaces.
  10. It is advisable to create separate regulations on how to proceed in connection with SARS-CoV-2 pandemic - It is recommended to prepare a room for the isolation of students suspected of SARS-CoV - 2 infection until the PCR swab test results have been obtained. In the case of the confirmed infection, there should be the transfer of the student for isolation under hospital conditions and/or to a designated isolation facility.
  11. It is suggested to reduce the number of seats in the place designated for joint learning of students – reduction of the number of seats by a half to comply with the regulation regarding 4 square meters per person. In the place designated for joint learning, it is advisable to keep a social distance (1.5 m) and use cotton face masks or face shields.
  12. Disinfection of touch surfaces using 70% alcohol after each student.
  13. It is suggested to use barriers (plexiglass sheets) to separate individual stands for the purpose of enabling students safe use.

It is recommended that people working on the premises of residence halls (porter's lodge, changing room, cleaning staff) should always move around in cotton face masks/face shields when having contact with other people.
THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE FACILITY (RESIDENCE HALLS) SUPERVISES AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RECOMMENDATIONS AND THEIR CORRECTNESS ON THE PREMISES.
